Need to leverage expertise across USDA to identify research gaps and execute research that adds to evidence base for Dietary Guidance. The USDA should be involved in helping establish the research gaps addressed by the Dietary Guidelines and conducting research to advance and evaluate the recommended Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The USDA, in conjunction with HHS and CDC, could establish a process to develop/recommend research gaps and ensure a broad, comprehensive perspective is considered by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. USDA currently provides support with nutrient/food group intake analyses and evidence based analysis, but is positioned to provide more input upfront from USDA researchers. In addition, USDA should focus on delivering research to help guide the Dietary Guidelines based on research findings of studies that address major public health issues.
