A limited number of animal and human studies have uncovered a relationship between citrus consumption and insulin resistance. In the U.S. it is estimated that one-quarter of overweight and obese adults have the metabolic syndrome, which includes insulin resistance. Research programs that show positive relationships between consumption of specific foods (e.g., citrus fruit) and positive health outcomes (e.g., reduced insulin resistance) will be more beneficial for providing dietary guidance compared to research programs that only assess nutrient intake and outcomes.
