The 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report included a recommendation to, “Shift food intake patterns to a more plant-based diet that emphasizes vegetables, cooked dry beans and peas, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seed.” This type of dietary pattern includes many low glycemic load foods. There is limited research showing how low glycemic load diets may reduce risk of type 2 diabetes and improve weight maintenance after weight loss, but no research has looked at how this type of dietary pattern may affect hypertension, a common health problem in the U.S. that is commonly associated with excessive sodium intake and inadequate potassium intake. Many nutrition researchers hypothesize that because low glycemic load diets reduce inflammation they may also reduce hypertension. Research testing this hypothesis would provide further evidence for the benefit of dietary patterns composed of whole, minimally processed foods, including fresh citrus fruit.
